What We Are Looking For

Nahj Institute's annual writing competition is designed as a serious intellectual exercise. We are looking for writing that engages a scholarly question with rigour, precision, and independent thought. This is not a promotional exercise; entries are judged solely on the quality of argument and evidence.

Each year the competition is centred on a set question drawn from one of our four research themes: Philosophy and Theology, Politics and Society, History and Culture, or Science and Ethics. The question is released several months before the deadline to allow for considered research and drafting.

All entrants receive written editorial feedback regardless of placing. Strong but unplaced entries may be offered publication at the discretion of the editorial team. Winning entries are published in the Nahj Journal or on the Institute website.

Prizes First, second, and third place prizes plus commendations
Publication Winning and commended entries considered for publication in the Nahj Journal or on the Institute website
Feedback Written feedback provided to all entrants
Judging Anonymous — judges do not see author names or affiliations until after ranking
Word Count 2,500 to 4,000 words, excluding bibliography and footnotes
Languages English only for 2026
